Structured PhD Programme in Biomedical Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (BMERM)
This new 4-year Structured PhD Programme in Biomedical Engineering and Regenerative Medicine, involves a core partnership of institutions: National University of Ireland Galway, University of Limerick and University College Cork, linked with a wider consortium of partners nationally and internationally, and the Irish Medical Devices Association (IMDA). BMERM combines a PhD research project with a didactic and experiential learning programme, resulting in a high quality learning experience for the student by combining world class research with focused clinical and industrial interaction, the latter facilitated by the direct involvement of IMDA with is membership of over 100 medical technology companies in Ireland.
Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Biomedical Engineering
Modern medicine has given rise to the development of a wide range of novel engineering solutions to clinical problems. Examples of these developments vary from orthopaedic implants such as total hip replacements to cardiovascular implants such as coronary stents (small wire scaffolds inserted into the blood vessels around the heart). As a result of the increased collaboration between engineers and doctors, the new discipline of biomedical Engineering developed. Biomedical Engineering is the fastest growing area of Engineering.
Biomedical Engineering (FT/) MSc
A new emphasis on research in the medical devices industry has created a need for engineers and scientists who have a deeper knowledge of biomedical engineering. Already there are a range of undergraduate programmes available to meet this need but many companies have indicated that a Postgraduate qualification in Biomedical Engineering was very desirable. It focusses on an industrial sector in which the island of Ireland has developed a global reputation for quality and excellence. The M.Sc Course is jointly taught by the Colleges of Engineering and Informatics and Electronics at the University of Limerick, Trinity College, Dublin and University College Dublin, with Medical Science input to UL from the RCSI. TCD Medical School provides Medical Science inputs for students at TCD. The joint nature of the Course brings together the world class expertise available at the participating institutions in a novel way.
