Mature Student Toolkit

The Career Toolkit was developed by the UL Careers Service as an aid for those working with mature students in a careers advisory capacity. It was originally created as part of the Mature Student Access Course at UL, but may be useful as a guide for other Careers Advisors working with mature students in Ireland. The overall objective of the toolkit is to prepare students for third-level study, and ultimately to develop successful, personal career management skills.

The toolkit comprises two main sections - the Educational Guidance Module, and the Career Development Module. Each module is presented using a number of tutorials, with accompanying notes, presentation slides* and tips for each topic. Combined, the modules outline successful approaches for delivering career topics such as Course and Career Investigation, Grant Applications, Skills Identification, CV and Application Form Preparation, Interview Advice and overall self-awareness. Students learn to present formally, and are also introduced to academic writing and research through a number of assignments.

We have received much feedback from students on the toolkit and have adapted it accordingly. Consequently, it is a robust accessory to tutoring adult learners. We welcome any comments you have, and are happy to answer any questions you may have in its regard. Should you wish to contact us, please do so by phone - 061 234227, or by email, Patsy.Ryan@ul.ie.

* The toolkit is available in Word or PDF format. It includes the presentation slides most recently used with UL students. However, the slides may be downloaded and adapted as you wish.
