Building the Future - May 29th - Fair for Graduates with Disabilities

Building the Future, May 29th, Citi Building, 1 North Wall Quay, Dublin 1. Main Event 11:00-15:00: Pre-booked talks 10:00-11:00 & 15:00-16:00

This event aims to help graduates with disabilities polish their job seeking skills and give them some important tips on successfully adjusting to the world of work and building a fulfilling career.

High profile employers will have stands, speak to graduates one on one about their expectations as employers and will field questions relating to their organisations and the sectors they work in. Employers in attendance will include Abbott Ireland, Deloitte, Citi, ESB, Bord Gais, Enterprise Rentacar, Radisson, An Post and more.

Mock interviews (pre-booking essential) will be carried out by some of most successful companies based in Ireland and graduates will get feedback on how to improve their performance and CVs.
Practical seminars (pre-booking essential) will bookend the event covering the subject of 'Making a Good First Impression' beforehand (10:00-11:00) and 'Next Steps: Applying what you've learned' after the close of the event (15:00-16:00).

Engineers Ireland Innovative Student Engineer of the Year Awards 2012

Engineers Ireland is delighted to launch our 2012 Innovative Student Engineer of the Year Awards, which is sponsored by Siemens.

The aim of the Innovative Student Engineer of the Year Awards is to highlight innovation in final year engineering projects. Final year students of Level 8 and Level 7 engineering degree programmes accredited by Engineers Ireland are eligible to enter.

There will be two awards: The Innovative Student Engineer of the Year 2012 Level 8, and The Innovative Student Engineer of the Year 2012 Level 7.

The competition is judged on the merit of the student’s final year project. The winners will each receive €1,500 in addition to the award.

The closing date for submission of entries is Thursday 24 May 2012 and the final of the competition will take place on Monday, June 18th 2012 at Engineers Ireland at 22 Clyde Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.

2012 CIMA Diploma in Islamic Finance - Registration now open

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) is once again offering the CIMA Diploma in Islamic Finance (CDIF) for 2012. This blended tuition programme comes at a time when the Irish government is actively working to establish the IFSC as a European hub for the provision of wholesale Islamic Finance services including enhancements to the tax regime for Islamic Finance contained in the Finance Act 2012. CIMA Ireland is the first professional accountancy body to introduce a professional qualification in Islamic Finance to the Irish market.

The Undergraduate Awards 2012

The Undergraduate Awards is an international non-profit awards programme that recognises independent thinking and creativity amongst undergraduate students. UA accepts the coursework of final and penultimate students, that has received a 2.1 or a first, across a wide range of disciplines. In 2011, they brought 28 students to Dublin for the Undergraduate Awards Summit, during which they were presented with their medals by President Mary McAleese in Dublin Castle, and were treated to two days of treats, events and activities around the city.  In 2012, the summit is set to be even more dynamic!

TEACHING ENGLISH IN KOREA - EPIK (English Program in Korea)

EPIK is a programme run by the Korean Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. It allows English speaking graduates to gain professional experience by teaching English in Korean government-run schools. The aim of EPIK is to conduct conversation classes for Korean primary and secondary school pupils to improve their fluency in English and to promote cultural awareness. Over 1,500 graduates participate in this programme and Ireland has been specifically designated as one of the countries from which EPIK wishes to recruit. A number of UL graduates are currently in Korea on this programme and recruitment for September 2012 will open on 1 April 2012. 

Applicants must: 

  • Have completed a bachelor’s degree in any discipline.
  • Be a citizen from one of the seven designated countries where English is the primary language. (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, USA and South Africa).
  • Be fluent and proficient in the English language.

Duties:

  • Assisting with or jointly conducting English classes with a Korean co-teacher.
  • Conducting English conversation classes for Korean students and teachers.
  • Preparing teaching materials and activities for English education.
  • Assisting with extracurricular activities.

Benefits include:

  • Free single furnished accommodation utilities not included)
  • Entrance allowance of c.€800 & Settlement Allowance of c.€190
  • Monthly salary of c. €1,000
  • Paid vacation for 18 working days
  • Severance pay (about one month salary)

TEACHING ENGLISH IN JAPAN – INTERAC PROGRAMME

Interac is the largest private provider of Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) in Japan – currently 2,900. It places graduates in state schools in cities throughout Japan on contracts of 7 months or 12 months. Interac provides training and support in preparation for placements and during the contract period. Many UL graduates have availed of this opportunity in recent years and have reported favourably on the experience.

Requirements

  • 12 years of education in the medium of English

Teachers work regular schedules, teaching up to six 50 minute classes per day to a maximum of 29.5 hours per week. Competitive salary and Visa sponsorship are provided for qualified candidates. Teach English in China Programme

The TEIC (Teach English in China) Programme is TEIC is an international work-travel programme which is run in conjunction with The China Education Association for International Exchange (CEAIE) [www.ceaie.edu.cn] in Beijing. It is a relatively new programme which recruited 75 English speaking graduates in 2011 and plans to recruit 120 in 2012. The programme director, who is based in the UK, is very keen to recruit Irish graduates in 2012.

TEIC is a small, friendly and non-commercial programme, offering a more personal travel experience. Your role, as a teacher, will be to provide English language conversational classes and correct students’ written work. The positions are in top-quality, vetted state schools, colleges or universities, in major cities e.g. Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Anshan, Urumqi, Shijiazhuang and Changsha. Most institutions recruit at least two English language teachers per year from the programme.

All participants complete a free TEFL training programme online, followed by two weeks certified training in Beijing. The programme runs from August / September to June. The Fall semester runs until early January with a mid semester break but no Christmas break. There is a four/five week paid holiday for the Chinese New Year, in January/February. This is when the teachers go travelling within China or outside the country. The Spring semester, with a mid semester break of a week, finishes at the end of June. There are a number of public state holidays in addition to these. Many teachers delay their return in order to enjoy a further period of travel and others stay to teach a second year or start careers in China.

Costs and Benefits

  • Graduates pay an initial fee of approximately €220 to cover administrative costs. They must also pay for a visa, approximately €115. All documentation required for the visa is provided.
  • Graduates also pay the return airfare upfront but this is repaid in two instalments over the teaching period.
  • A local salary of approximately €115 per week – equivalent to local teaching salary and more than adequate to cover expenses.
  • Free furnished accommodation is provided and utility bills are covered.
  • Local ‘buddy’ is appointed in the school.

It gathers quotes directly from current employees with comments on their company, the culture, hours, interview, salary, perks, training, culture and much more. The concept of employee reviews has really caught on and 50+ big name employers (the likes of KPMG, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Deloitte, Slaughter and May, Grant Thornton to name a few) have already sent the survey to their employees on our behalf. European ScholarshipPortal

ScholarshipPortal is a new initiative funded by the European Commission which integrates the funding opportunities for studying, working or performing research in one of the European nations. The portal aims to stimulate and help students worldwide to find and select appropriate scholarships to study in Europe. Some of the key barriers to studying abroad are financial concerns or lack of funds. ScholarshipPortal goes some way to overcome this barrier by informing students on the many opportunities that exist.

It provides:

The Intern Work & Travel (IWT) Program allows participants to come to the United States, for up to 12 months, to work at a job within their field of study and to travel during their stay.

This program allows you to work and travel anywhere within the United States.

Work Experience for Unemployed Graduates

Gradlink is an IBEC graduate scheme is to assist recent graduates improve their skills during the current downturn and prepare them for the economic recovery. For unemployed graduates, this scheme could provide an important opportunity to kick-start your career by giving you real life work experience and improve your employment potential while trying to build your CV. The Gradlink program is not for current students. Only people who have already graduated and have been on the live register for three months can apply for the advertised internships. Most of the internships are unpaid but eligible graduates would continue to receive their social welfare benefits while participating in the programme. A number of employers in the Mid West region have expressed a specific interest in receiving applications from UL graduates.

The scheme is accompanied by an optional postgraduate certificate in management and leadership, based on a 16 day-release programme. However, the internship itself is structured around the individual needs of graduates and business. The Gradlink web site provides a facility for graduates to register their interest, keep up-to-date on new internships on offer and ensure that they will get the maximum benefit from the internship. http://www.ibec.ie/gradlink

Study or Work Placements for Unemployed Graduates

The government recently announced two new initiative designed to retrain or upskill graduates who have been made redundant due to the economic downturn, or graduates who have been unemployed for 6 months.

(a) Free Postgraduate Courses:

1,000 postgraduate third-level places will be available in a wide range of part-time courses in universities and institutes of technology. UL is offering 100 places on postgraduate courses in Business and Engineering & Science. Only nominal fees (up to €500) will be charged depending on the programme. Students will be entitled to retain their social welfare payments while on those courses. Applications under this scheme should be made directly to the institutions involved. (b) Work Placement Programme:

This is designed to offer unemployed people, including unemployed graduates, the opportunity to obtain 6 months experience in a work situation. There will be provision for 1,000 placements for graduates. These placements are unpaid but participants will continue to receive their existing social welfare entitlements from the Department of Social and Family Affairs during their 6 month work placement. New publication to help Irish graduates succeed in recessionary times

Focus for success in challenging times’ is a new booklet produced by Graduate Careers Ireland as a resource to help Irish graduates deal with a difficult job market.

The booklet draws on the knowledge base and expertise of a team of careers advisors, industry consultants and counselling professional who provide different perspectives on the challenges facing graduates. It provides a toolkit of realistic, personal, career and life-coping skills and strategies to help students and graduates devise an action plan to achieve success in a time of diminishing employment prospects. People are still being hired and graduates are finding jobs but it requires more research, initiative and determination than in previous years. The first step is to download this booklet and follow the practical advice to get on the track for success.

Working in the USA

The website of the Irish Immigration Centre in Boston is a valuable source of information on all sorts of topics relating to working and living in the USA. It provides up to date information on the various categories of visa as well as details on employment opportunities. Of particular interest is the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) section. The website address is: http://www.iicenter.org/

The Jobweb website is an excellent starting point for accessing useful information and contacts in the USA. This website has a stream dedicated to students and provides advice and information on all aspects of the job search, including a list of useful Job Search sites. It can be accessed at: http://www.jobweb.com

Another useful website with information on how to find an internship in the USA is the CIEE website. http://www.councilexchanges.org/jobsusa/. CIEE is the Council on International Educational Exchange - the organisation which sponsors the J1 visa programmes which enable many thousands of Irish students to travel to the USA each summer. This organisation also sponsors the J Internship visa for students undertaking a Cooperative Education placement in the USA. This visa can also be used by graduates in the first year after completing full-time education, providing they have an offer of an internship from a US employer and they can provide some evidence of their intention to return to Ireland when the visa expires. CIEE work in partnership with USIT NOW in promoting international work programmes.

The USIT website is another very useful source of information on all their services to students. Visit their website at: http://www.usitnow.ie and select 'USA Work and Travel' for details of the US programmes.
