Interdisciplinary Programme
Brian Lacey
BA
There are very few opportunities to study insurance to degree levels in Ireland or the UK. There are even fewer opportunities to study it in combination with Languages, European History, Politics, and Economics. However at UL this combination is possible for those students who are accepted for the degree in Insurance and European studies. Kildare county footballer Brian Lacey took on the challenge of tackling all of these subjects when he enrolled in the Insurance and European Studies degree at UL.
Brian chose Insurance & European Studies at UL as it offered him an opportunity to study both Business and Humanities subjects. "I studied them for the Leaving Cert. and the two areas I was interested in were covered by the course offered in UL." During his degree programme Brian completed a Cooperative Education placement with Independent Insurance plc. in the UK where he developed a practical appreciation of the industry.
The insurance world is changing rapidly and radically. It now requires more highly trained graduates than ever before to work in General Insurance, Life Assurance and Insurance Broking. There is a need for individuals who are capable of working both internationally and in Ireland. Brian is helping to fill this gap, working with Coyle Hamilton Insurance Brokers in Dublin, Ireland's largest firm of independent Insurance brokers providing a wide range of services to companies and individuals. The company boasts a staff of over 350 employees in Ireland and the UK. Brian finds the work within the Employee Benefits and Investment Division of Coyle Hamilton extremely challenging and in particular enjoys meeting clients, calculating their benefits, and dealing with all aspects of Pensions Law and Investments. According to Brian there is a well-developed network in existence among students who have graduated from the Insurance and European Studies programme. This is great help to graduates, maintaining close professional and social contact with colleagues working in major insurance companies in Ireland, the UK, and mainland Europe.
"The best people to talk to when looking for advice are those who have gone through the UL system. Speak to as many people as you can. The facilities and clubs in UL are on a par, if not better, than any other third-level institution".
