Interdisciplinary Programme
James Murphy
BA

Taking a less traditional route to success

Some students choose a less traditional route, and pursue the interesting elements of a interdisciplinary degree. For James Murphy, a degree in Law & Accounting provided him with a uniquely structured programme, covering two subjects that interested him.

The combined degree is designed to provide students with expertise in the disciplines of Law and Accounting, together with an analytical approach to problem solving. The degree allows significant exemptions from the entry requirements of professional, legal and accounting bodies. The qualification has proved to be very popular with employers and graduates are highly sought after because of their comprehensive education and focused skills.

James had three reasons for choosing this degree programme in UL. Firstly, he was interested in an interdisciplinary course that provided training in both accounting and legal skills. Secondly, he was attracted by the generous exemptions offered by the professional, legal and accounting bodies. Finally, the modular subject structure in UL allowed him to take French as an extra subject. Having assessed the options available, he decided that the Law & Accounting degree would be invaluable in any future career, whether in the specialised fields of law or accounting, or in the more general area of financial services.

During his studies, James undertook his Cooperative Education with J P Morgan, a leading global financial firm in London. After graduation, he qualified as a barrister and also gained a Masters in Business Studies in Strategic Management and Planning. James is now employed as a Business Infrastructure Management Analyst with J P Morgan. As a BIM Analyst, James' principal responsibilities include the monitoring of the all London-based legal entities and the re-engineering of the foreign exchange monitoring and control processes. It is a very challenging position which requires the continuous development of new skills in a role that continually evolves.
