Jason Cowman
BSc
Jason Cowman's love of sport goes beyond that of a favourite pastime. His desire to become more actively involved in the world of sport led him to apply for the Sports Science degree in UL. A place on the programme gave him the opportunity to explore how the body behaves when faced with any number of sporting challenges. Now, not only does he enjoy his knowledge of sport, but his full-time employment with the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) means that he is an integral part of the national sports scene.
Jason completed his Cooperative Education placement as Corporate Fitness Consultant with Shannon Development on the National Technological Park, Limerick. He was involved in the organisation of "health days" within the Park, which were aimed at offering corporate workers the opportunity to learn more about their health and general well-being. Basic tests were performed which ranged from cholesterol testing to muscular strength and aerobic fitness tests. Those who participated were given basic advice on how small changes in lifestyle could help improve their health. Some participants additionally took part in individualised exercise programmes. Jason was also involved in the organisation of various sporting events such as soccer competitions, tennis tournaments, healthy lifestyle events such as the Plassey 10K run and the establishment of several walkways in the Park.
The Leinster Branch of Irish Rugby Football Union currently employs Jason as a Provincial Fitness Advisor. Jason plans the provincial fitness training programmes for senior, A-team and under 21 levels. The programmes provide him with the opportunity to put what he learned at UL to practical use, demonstrating ways to help athletes improve strength, muscle mass and power. Jason does all of this through a vigorous training programme that uses aerobic and anaerobic exercises, speed training, flexibility, and body development. Jason is incredibly satisfied with the fact that in his everyday work he gets to participate in the development of Irish sport.
