About the Careers Resource Area

The Careers Service has moved to a new location in E0019, beside the main Coop Office and opposite Admissions. This area serves as a resource centre for both the Cooperative Education programme and the Careers Service. It contains a wealth of information in the form of reference files, information leaflets, career booklets, employer information, employer directories, postgraduate study booklets and directories. This is an open plan design where students can browse through the material. It also holds a large supply of take-away booklets and a selection of reference material to be read on the premises. In addition to the hard copy material, there are 4 PCs available for students so that you can access career websites and practice aptitude tests.

Where are we

The Careers Service is located in Block E, Level 0, in Room E0019.

Opening Hours

Monday to Friday: 10.00am. - 1.00pm and 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

The Careers Service is also open for CV Reviews / Quick Queries (10 minute sessions with Careers Adviser) every week day between 1.00pm and 2.00pm.

Layout

The Careers Service offers many forms of careers resources, which are available to students in Room E0019. Also located there are:

  • The Careers Adviser - Disability Support office

  • Information areas on the following topics (layout outlined in accompanying map): Starting Points, Career Information, Working Abroad / Voluntary Work, Resources for Students with Disabilities, Postgraduate Study, Employer Information, Applications & Interviews, and Take Away material
  • Two reading desks 
  • Four PCs for Career research

Contents of Career Resource Area

Career booklets - Irish and UK

There is a comprehensive range of career booklets which have been written by Irish and UK careers advisers especially for graduates. These booklets are published by AGCSI (Irish) or AGCAS (UK) and they are quite distinctive by their covers. They are very useful sources of information as they are updated regularly. We stock multiple copies and we invite you to select whichever ones meet your particular interest. For a complete listing and a summary of contents check out;

Jobseeking strategies

These are mainly take-away booklets on all aspects of the job search, including applications, interviews, CV preparation, choosing a career, alternative careers etc.

Employer information

  • Employer files - these are box files containing information on Irish and overseas employers, mainly company reports and graduate recruitment literature. They are intended for reference only and should be returned to the file after use. Information is stored alphabetically.
  • Directories of Irish and overseas employers. A selection of directories which contain information and lists of contacts relating to specific occupations and areas of work. (Link to Publications)
  • Application forms - Employer application forms are available when they are specifically required by employers.

Career folders

  • The Black folders contain information on career opportunities for each unique course of study in UL. These files contain information on career patterns of recent graduates, Job titles and names of employers, typical vacancies, samples of employer information, and general information on careers for these disciplines.
  • Green folders contain copies of Jobfile and vacancies recently advertised.
  • Yellow folders contain information on Career Fairs, Recruitment Agencies.
  • Red folders contain information on Summer work.

Postgraduate study

  • Directories of postgraduate courses in Ireland, UK, USA and EU countries.
  • Prospectuses from individual universities, mainly in Ireland and the UK.
  • Information on Grants and Scholarships
  • GRE - Graduate Record Examination test booklets and application material

Working overseas

Information on working overseas is arranged by country and comprises directories, booklets and take-away leaflets.

General career information

In addition to the above, we hold many other sources of career information, in the form of Casebooks, Periodicals, and Publications of Professional Bodies.
