Technology has significantly improved the workplace for people with disabilities. For example, the cell-phone and PC are two of the most powerful and versatile tools that can be customised to the user's needs and skills.

Typical adjustments now include the following:

• Voice activated software
• Adapted keyboards
• Pointing devices
• Scanning systems
• Software that facilitates the user, whatever the circumstances might be

Environmental factors should also be considered and planned for.

These include:

• General access
• Lighting temperature
• Ventilation
• Pace and duration of work tasks
• Schedule of rest breaks
• A quiet work environment

The first step you should take is to consult with the Disability Liaison Officer and the Careers Support Service to explore what help is available to overcome any practical difficulties you might experience.

Students with disabilities should have early and frequent contact with the Careers Service. The Careers Support Service was set up to address the individual and diverse needs of students with disabilities. Click on Career Appointments to arrange a meeting.
