ABOUT UL

President's Welcome

I am delighted you are considering the University of Limerick (UL) to pursue your undergraduate studies. It gives me great pleasure to present to you this guide to the extensive range of programmes on offer for the academic year 2012/2013.

At UL we are dedicated to providing our students with an outstanding student experience. We offer excellent academic programmes, relevant and current for the world in which we live. These programmes are complemented by our Cooperative Education programme - over thirty years old, the programme is one of the most successful of its kind, securing work placements for students across 1700 employers, Irish and International. This experience, coupled with your academic programme of choice, will assist you greatly in making decisions about your future career as well as providing you with valuable experience of the world of work. Our recently forged alliance with NUI Galway will deliver a distinctive learning experience for our students, allowing them to connect with two of Ireland’s hubs of educational excellence and research activity.

Ensuring our students start university life on a very positive footing is important to us at UL. The transition to third-level education can be quite daunting and so the Centre for Teaching an Learning at UL has introduced the First Seven Weeks Programme to our students in making that all important transition. The programme is designed especially for first years and delivered to them during their very early weeks. As well as providing guidance and support, the programme delivers a series of lectures designed to focus students’ attention on various issues covering both their academic needs and their overall wellbeing. Topics previously covered have included ‘settling in, finding your way around’ and ‘study skills and time management’. UL also provides more on-campus residence accommodation than any other university in Ireland - ensuring students enjoy ample opportunity to mix with their peers and settle in promptly.

UL’s formula for academic achievement reflects an informed insight into the learning needs of today’s student. Our most distinguished professors and experienced researchers, outstanding in their chosen fields, teach our students and UL has been widely acclaimed for the high quality of its teaching. The UL Centre for Teaching and Learning works to provide support and to facilitate all those involved in teaching and learning at UL.

Our programmes take place in an outstanding student-centred learning environment, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities– these include fully equipped lecture theatres and over 222 research laboratories encompassing undergraduate teaching, research, specialist and hi-tech facilities. Being a UL student you will enjoy one of the finest sports and recreation facilities in Europe. With over 70 clubs and societies on offer, UL also boasts the first 50-metre indoor swimming pool in Ireland, an outstanding sports Arena, a modern students’ centre and a concert hall which serves as the cultural centre of the region.

Through maintaining the standard of excellence that UL has already achieved and constantly developing and looking towards the future, UL aims to remain a dynamic and innovative university. If you choose to entrust your undergraduate education to this institution I can assure you our programmes will challenge you, our faculty and staff will support and encourage you to achieve your full academic potential and we will do so in an environment that was made with you in mind.

I hope you will join us on an exciting and challenging academic journey.

With warm regards,
Professor Don Barry
President
