Module Descriptions

DN5101 / DN5102 Dance Technique and Improvisation 1 and 2
These modules allow you to develop a detailed understanding of basic contemporary dance principles. Through practical dance classes you will increase your own movement vocabulary and dance performance skills. While concepts of action, space, time, shape and energy are explored in improvisation tasks, co-ordinated and weighted use of the body in space is emphasised in technical practice. This practical experience will inform and enhance your confidence and ability as a dance educator.

DN5103 / DN5104 Choreography 1 and 2
In these modules you will begin to invent, set and structure movement material as a choreographic resource. Through creative composition exercises you will be guided to gain an understanding of choreographic processes and principles. The main aim of the module is to develop your ability and strengthen your condfidence in communicating ideas in dance. Content will include solo and group work. Through directing, collaborating and co-operating with other students you will further the leadership and communication skills relevant to dance education practice.

DN5105 Dance in Education
This module will develop your knowledge of content, methodologies and evaluation procedures relevant to the teaching of dance in a variety of educational contexts. Understanding of dance technique and choreographic processes gained from the above modules will be extended and applied in developing appropriate teaching materials and methods. Increasing your awareness of the role of dance in arts education will enable you to design and implement lessons, schemes of work and programmes of study.

  DN5106 Dance appreciation/Reading Dancing
This module aims to develop your perception of dance through observation and analysis of dance works. It focuses on a range of twentieth century choreographers to extend your understanding of styles, conventions and practices. The study of concepts related to artistic and aesthetic education will underpin your planning of activities to promote dance appreciation in education contexts.

DN5107 Cultural Studies
This module will provide you with an understanding of the historical and cultural influences that have shaped growth and development of contemporary dance. The focus here is on the changing contexts of choreographic practice in twentieth century dance. Topics will include study of ways in which dance relates to cultural issues such as race, age and gender.

DN5108 / DN5109 Research Methods and Project Proposal
These modules enable you to investigate areas of dance which may be related to your workplace based practice or other areas of dance interest. They support you in working your way through a systematic dance issue or a problem solving process in which you identify particular issues of practice with a view to improving them. You will produce a report that gives an account of this process, showing also that you can relate your work to the theoretical issues that you will study as part of the modules. Your action research project encourages you to work with others and to show that you understand the development of your own learning as you reflect on your actions and study.
