Evening BA at the University of Limerick

About the Evening BA

Introduction

Specifically designed to promote access and flexibility for mature students returning to learning, this four-year degree programme offers the option of a diploma after two years or progression on to degree level after four years. A preliminary orientation course in information technology, word processing, note -taking, study skills, and in how to use library and information resources, is provided by way of support to students. The academic aims of the programme are to encourage evaluation of Irish society in a wider European context including historical development and perspectives, political institutions and ideology, sociological perspectives on socio-economic change and social reality. The programme will also develop critical skills in the reading of modern literature and an understanding of comparative literature; it will enhance research skills and the acquisition of analytical tools in the collection and analysis of qualitative information and quantitative data.

Entry Requirements

Selection for places on the course is based on the individual’s ability to commit to, complete and benefit from the course as demonstrated by application and interview. A courses selection committee will base its selection decision on criteria such as life and work experience, evidence of prior academic experience, and the range of the applicant’s interests.

Career Opportunities

These include the Public Service, European and International Agencies, Media, Journalism and Public Relations, Policy Evaluation Research, Social and Market Research and Teaching. The programme is recognised for teacher training purposes by the Teacher’s Registration Council for the teaching of History (Junior and Leaving Certificate levels) and CSPE (Junior Cert Level).

Programme of Study

At the start of the course students choose three out of four subjects: History, Politics, Sociology, or Literature. Literature comprises holistic modules taught in English, e.g. Romanticism, Enlightenment Literature, drawn from the French, German, Spanish and English subject areas. Each subject is made up of eight modules. Employing a new Blended Learning Approach means that students will be able to study on-line from alternative locations and learn using audio materials, visual aids and distance learning methods which may account for up to half of their study time. The remaining study time will consist of traditional face-to-face classes delivered at UL on alternate evenings (Mondays to Thursdays) from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Students will attend UL on three of those nights on a rotation basis (typically once every three weeks, depending on which three subjects they choose and their scheduled contact sessions. In semesters 6 and 7 students write a research based Final Year Project and have two contact sessions per week, either on-line or at UL.
