Exceptional Learning Experience

The provision of an exceptional learning experience is central to life at UL. Purpose-designed buildings and environs combine with the most modern research facilities to provide a wonderful learning atmosphere in which students can achieve their best.

Our students at the University of Limerick have the opportunity to work with some of the brightest and best faculty in a great environment for learning and personal development.

Approach

The UL campus provides excellent access to multiple technology resources including; state of the art computer labs, Wireless Internet access, A personal email account and online access to many services.

There are many learning supports available to UL students. For example, Sulis is a learning management system designed to help lecturers, tutors and students have spaces (web sites) for collaboration, communication, teaching and learning. There are five learning support centres on the UL campus; The Mathematics Learning Centre, The ICT Learning Centre, The Science Learning Centre, The Language Support Unit and The Writing Centre.

These drop-in centres are designed to assist students who need extra support in certain areas of their learning. They provide one-to-one and small group tutoring, as well as online learning tutorials and revision sessions.

Faculty of Science & Engineering

The Faculty of Science and Engineering offers a high quality undergraduate and post graduate experience at the University of Limerick.

Faculty of Education & Health Sciences

This Faculty brings together a number of related disciplines in Education and Professional Studies, Physical Education, Sports Sciences, Psychology, Nursing and Midwifery, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy and Medicine.

Kemmy School of Business

The Kemmy Business School is a dynamic and innovative business school with a reputation for providing a first class business education that prepares graduates for successful and rewarding careers. The KBS facilities are second to none and include a simulated Wall St. style Trading Room - the first such dedicated facility in any Irish university.

Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences

The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences is a vibrant centre of critical thinking and a generator of nationally and internationally esteemed scholarship

For undergraduate students whose talents and interests lie in subjects such as languages, history, sociology, cultural studies, music, politics and law this Faculty is an excellent choice.

Medical School

The University of Limerick Medical School's mission is to graduate doctors who are competent in a broad range of diagnostic, consultative, communication and organizational skills. Our graduates will be conscious of their social responsibilities and committed to lifelong learning and research as a foundation for high quality patient-centred care.

Other UL Courses

Interdisciplinary programmes at the University of Limerick are those programmes that are jointly taught by two faculties. These programmes enable students to combine subjects from different areas, such as Business, Humanities, Engineering and Science. These courses combine course work in exciting and innovative ways. This enables students to receive a broader exposure to subject areas that would not otherwise be available in courses delivered by one faculty.

Facilities

UL students benefit from bright modern facilities. Everything is geared towards enabling students to learn without encountering outmoded facilities or shortages. The University of Limerick Glucksman Library is modern and is purpose-built to provide a fantastic learning environment. Work will commence shortly on a major extension to the library which will further enhance its services.

Lecture theatres at UL are also modern and have excellent acoustics.

There are many study rooms and seminar rooms where students can meet and work on group projects as well as sharing ideas and learning together.

UL has computer labs in buildings all over the campus, so you are never far from access to a PC. We even have a 24 hour computer lab! All of our computer labs have high speed broadband access through the UL network.

Our language support unit has excellent facilities for viewing films and listening to recordings.

Science laboratories and engineering laboratories at UL offer unparalleled facilities. We pride ourselves on the wide range of sophisticated equipment available for use by our students.

Our music technology lab and recording studio allows students access to recording equipment and Macs running music editing software.

Work Experience

The Cooperative Education programme is one of the most exciting features of degree programmes at the University of Limerick. The programme involves placing students in employment relevant to their degree for six or eight months during their undergraduate studies.

Undertaking a Cooperative Education placement is an integral part of the academic programme and students must successfully complete their placement in order to graduate. Some 1500 employers both within Ireland and internationally take UL students on placements each year. The practical benefits to students are:

  • They gain practical work experience prior to graduation, improving their employment prospects
  • They get a chance to see the relevance of their course to the work environment
  • They are exposed to a wide range of work situations
  • They may have the opportunity to develop good team skills
  • They may get specialised training in certain sectors, adding to their qualifications
  • Cooperative Education graduates enjoy a higher than average success rate in finding employment relevant to their expertise
  • In circumstances where placement restrictions apply owing to personal limitations or when unfavourable economic conditions exist, alternative education and practical programmes are arranged for the benefit of students.

Careers

Graduates from the University of Limerick have an excellent employment record in all sectors of the economy. Major graduate employers deliberately target UL graduates because of the combination of intellectual abilities, personal qualities and relevant work experience that they offer.

The Careers Service in UL provides information and support to help students to develop effective career plans in preparation for graduation. These services include the following:

  • Careers advice. All students are encouraged to use the careers advisory service to explore career options and plan their career path. Students can avail of individual consultations, group seminars and online career planning resources on the Careers website.
  • Careers information. A wide range of career resources is available in the Careers Service room, covering all aspects of career choice and postgraduate study opportunities.
  • Careers Fairs. Several major careers events take place on the campus each year which attract a large number of Irish and international employers who are interested in recruiting UL graduates.
  • Company presentations and interviews. Many employers visit the campus to hold recruitment presentations and interviews as part of a graduate recruitment programme.
  • Vacancy details. The careers website has a jobs section with information on graduate opportunities relevant to UL students and graduates.
