Research Interests

All of my research areas fall under the broad heading of sociolinguistics, the reflexive relationship between language and society, particularly in the areas of public and media language. My specific interest is in the interrelationship between the media, markets and languages.

Current Projects: Knowledge Interfaces (PI, Professor Angela Chambers) funded by the Higher Education Authority, 2007-2011. I am a member of the ‘Changing Communications’ cluster (led by David Atkinson) of this project, which is part of the Irish Social Sciences Platform.

Current Projects: Northern Multilingualism (PI, Professor Sari Pietikäinen, University of Jyväskylä) funded by the Finnish Academy, 2008-2010. Máiréad Moriarty is the post-doctoral fellow for this project is. Sari, Máiréad and I are looking at the area of multilingualism, authenticity and commercial discourses, particularly in relation to tourism.

Co-editor, with Sue Wright, of Language and Globalisation book series published by Palgrave-Macmillan.
