- Senior Lecturer in Journalism
Mary Dundon is a Senior Lecturer in Journalism and a regular political commentator in print and broadcast journalism.
She was appointed the first Senior Lecturer in Journalism at the University of Limerick in 2008. As Head of Journalism, she spearheaded the introduction of the first BA in Journalism and New Media degree programme and the Graduate Diploma/MA in Journalism degree programme at the University.
During her tenure as Head of Journalism, the students produced the first community newspaper for a disadvantaged community in Limerick, The Moyross Voice. Two further newspapers, The Southill Voice and The Parish Voice, have been produced by the students for disadvantaged communities.
Mary organised the first outreach Community Radio Training Programme at the University for community leaders living in disadvantaged areas designated for regeneration.
Before joining the University, she worked as a Political Correspondent with the Irish Examiner newspaper. During her journalism career, she wrote many exclusive stories and was a regular political commentator for RTE, TV3, TG4, Today FM and Newstalk.
She was awarded the Justice in Media Award in 2000 by the Law Society for an investigative article entitled: Who Judges the Judges?
She holds a BA in Irish and History from the National University of Ireland, Galway and a Graduate Diploma in Journalism from Dublin City University.
Her research interests include: political satire – its impact on Irish public opinion and elections, reform of local government and the role of opinion polls in influencing voters.
