ELT/Linguistics
MA in English Language Teaching
Our MA in English Language Teaching programme has been running since 1990 and is the only one of its kind in Ireland. The course has been hugely successful and our graduates have always enjoyed full employment rates, either at home or abroad.
English as a Foreign Language (EFL)
We teach EFL to an ever-increasing number of foreign students from a variety of disciplines and home universities who come on short term study exchanges to UL. We currently host up to 250 in each semester.
In addition UL offers a number of English language courses including a foundation programme at the University of Limerick Language Centre.
LLCC offers the following:
- ELT (English Language Teaching)
- ESL (English as a Second Language)
- TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)
English Language Teaching (ELT)
The undergraduate TEFL elective stream is an integral part of many of our primary degree programmes including the BA in Applied Languages (LM044) and the BA in Language, Literature and Film (LM045). It can also be taken as an elective by students on many other degrees offered by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Undergraduate TEFL consists of three consecutive modules which run through the second part of third year and throughout fourth year leading to a TEFL qualification which is fully recognised by the Irish Department of Education and Science. Many of our TEFL undergraduate students are offered teaching positions abroad as part of their co-operative education placements and many others find their way back into teaching on completion of their degrees.
In addition we run teacher training courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
