SIF 2
The SIF 2 award of €12.5 million comprises three areas of activity which are rooted in the University’s strategy and reflect key objectives of SIF. The projects are innovative, they involve substantial collaboration, and they support the delivery of core activities and will shape future development in UL and its partners. The strategic scope of Shannon Consortium activity proposed under SIF Cycle 2 builds on many of the achievements outlined in Cycle I. As in Cycle 1, UL will be the contact institution for overall co-ordination, with the management of projects being shared amongst the partners. The governance structure established during Cycle 1 will be continued in Cycle 2: the Shannon Consortium Steering Committee (comprising senior officers of Consortium institutions); project management teams: and regular progress reporting and monitoring of expenditure.
The following is a brief overview of the funded projects:
(1)Strand 1: The Regional Learning Gateway.
The Shannon Consortium Regional Learning Gateway established in Cycle 1 will be extended to Clare and Kerry. Additional interventions for younger learners will focus on socio-economically disadvantaged areas in Limerick plus a disadvantaged area in Tralee through work with specific cohorts of learners in primary and secondary schools with a view to achieving a long-term impact.(2) Strand 2: Innovation in Teaching and Learning Support.
Funding has been awarded to establish a Teaching and Learning Incubation Centre which will foster continuous innovation by faculty members. We also propose to establish a National Centre for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and Learning which builds on the outcomes of the Cycle 1 project and will address the national crisis in these subjects.- Strand 2.1: Regional Teaching and Learning Incubation Centre
