The quantitative stream is pitched at students who already have some training in quantitative methods, but wish to learn techniques that will be relevant in real research. It covers multiple regression analysis, as a really important foundational method, and looks at categorical data analysis -- very important in the social sciences -- including binary, multinomial and ordinal logistic regression, inter alia. A substantial part of the course is devoted to secondary analysis of existing large-scale data sources.
Students are expected to have a basic level of competence, to understand statistical inference, the concepts of significance and hypothesis testing, and to have a working knowledge of at least bivariate regression analysis. The first Monday will consist of an intensive refresher course covering these ideas, but is not suitable for those starting from scratch.
Intensive refresher course for all day Monday 9 Jan, 3 three-day sessions (3.5 hrs per day), 10 ECTS credits (subject to prior reading and the submission of assignments for assessment)
This year there will be a special focus on the European Social Survey, the Irish branch of which is being carried out in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick.
