The digital divide is a term increasingly used by educators, policymakers and government to describe the effect that the Internet and associated technologies have had on the global community. There is an ever increasing need to up-skill both practitioners and indeed future graduates with real world skills to help grow the knowledge economy.
Current Professional Academies associated with the University of Limerick help level the education playing field and take advantage of online forums, course material, pre-test examinations and study modes.

| CISCO CCNA, Wireless The Networking Academy program utilizes a blended learning model, integrating face-to-face teaching with a challenging web-based curriculum, hands-on lab exercises, and Internet-based assessment. Academy graduates are prepared for networking and IT-related careers in the public and private sectors, as well as for higher education in engineering, computer science and related field. The curricula included in this program consists of 16 courses covering a broad range of topics from basics on how to build and maintain a network, to creating a website, object-oriented programming, and more complex IT concepts such as applying advanced troubleshooting tools. CCNA curriculum is available in nine different languages. Our courses are designed to give students hands-on technical experience to help prepare them for IT careers as well as post-secondary IT-related degrees. A number of the Academy courses are aligned to national and/or state standards in science, math and language arts. In addition, soft skills such as career planning, project planning and teamwork are integrated into each curriculum. Participating Academies will become part of the Cisco Networking Academy Program, Cisco Systems' global public private partnership alliance, which has reached approximately 10,000 educational institutions in over 150 countries. Close to 1,000,000 students have successfully completed networking and other IT courses offered as a part of the diverse Academy curricula. | MySQL Open Source Academy is an independent intitiative for course development for Open Source Software. IT Professionals find that these courses are an effective means to acquire knowledge on a wide range of OS software. At present OSA has a curriculum aimed at certification for Linux as well as a range of specialist hands-on workshops. The course material uses an approach that is based on real world pratical use of the topic but also covers the theories behind the subject. The material was written and reviewed by subject matter experts with years of experience on the job. All courses have hands-on lab excersises taken from real world scenarios that demonstrate use of the knowledge. The instructor guides students though the exercises. The material has a structure that help to build knowledge gradually and strikes a balance between presentation and hands-on experience. The courses are distribution independent but are tested on major distributions such as RedHat/Fedora, Suse and Debian/Ubuntu. |

| Microsoft IT, Pro Platinum Membership in the Microsoft IT Academy Program provides valuable benefits for learning institutions, faculty, students, and communities. Membership is available at two levels: IT Pro Platinum and Microsoft Office Specialist. The IT Pro Platinum level provides members with comprehensive curriculum and workforce development resources. It includes courses for IT Pro (or Microsoft Certified Professional) and Microsoft Office Specialist certifications.
