Women's Studies at the University of Limerick

Women’s Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study and at UL we offer challenging courses on women and gender that address intersections of gender, ‘race’, class, age, ability and sexuality in society, popular culture, literature, history and politics.

Our MA programme in Gender, Culture and Society is designed specifically to cater for students interested in the interdisciplinary study of gender in culture and society. It is offered on a full-time and part-time basis and students can opt for modules offered by several departments in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. The programme enables students to specialise in historical, socio-political or literary/cultural approaches to gender.

Our Gender, Culture and Society PhD Forum fosters an intellectual community and a vibrant research culture among all those researching feminist and gender-related topics at PhD level. This Forum, which is facilitated by a member of faculty, is largely peer-led and ensures knowledge and skills exchange between PhD students.

The annual Gender, Culture and Society @UL Seminar Series is designed to create a public space for scholarly discussion by inviting international speakers as well as speakers from other universities in Ireland to present on their current research.

Women’s Studies @UL Research: faculty members pursue a range of individual research interests (see People) and, with colleagues in Global Women’s Studies at NUI Galway, have established Gender ARC, the Advanced Research Consortium on Gender, Culture and the Knowledge Society, which is a strategic research alliance bringing together academics working on feminist and gender-related research across disciplines in both institutions.
