University
of Limerick (1992)
Pen Pictures from the past (All
the Thirty Somethings!!)
Alan Quirke. Goalkeeper,
3rd Electronic Production. Club: Arrowvale Rovers.
Star Performer at full-forward for Tipperary U21 footballers
last year. Still likes to wander up the field aimlessly.
On co-op in.Montenotty.and is forced to work alot
of overtime, even on Saturday nights!
Brian Lohan: Corner
Back: 2nd Business. Club: Wolfe Tones. Has played
minor and U21 for Clare. Should be on co-op but has
decided to fix toilets for charity instead.
Willie Burke: Full
Back. 1st Metalwork. Club: Oranmore-Mara. Played minor
for Galway last year. Hotly tipped to take over from
Conor Hayes. Some say he already has.
Mark Kenny: Corner
Back. 3rd Business. Club: St. Rynaghs. A good man
to pull a hamstring, especially before training. A
hamstring isn’t in your shoulder, Mark".
Paul Hardiman:
Wing Back. 4th Metalwork. Club:Athenry. Has played
minor, U21 and is a current Galway senior. Our club
captain this year. A vagrant often seen alone in the
Stables crying into a pint of Smithwicks "Will
we ever win the county?" Is in favour of Mary
I. Joining up with University of Limerick.
Darragh O’Neill:
Centre Back. 2.5 Mechanical. Club: Ahane. Darragh
- teetotaller who had almost every county honour in
the game. Tried to turn professional with Limerick
Seniors for a year but is now trying to re-adjust
to college life. Not that easy, is it, Darragh?
Ger Moroney: Wing
Back. 3rd Production Management. Club: O’Callaghan’s
Mill. A kind of Camogie coach. Some say he will become
a full-time, successful one in the future. This camogie
coach started going out with a girl he was training
and ten years on they are still going out!! Any thoughts
for getting married Ger??
Damian Considine:
Mid Field. 3rd Production Engineering. Club: Cratloe.
Played minor, U21 and senior for Clare. His skill
on the field is often attributed to his talented out
work. Never has any problems with his feet, our Damian.
Pat Maguire: Mid
Field Cullen. Played minor, U21 and junior with Tipperary.
Could have a bright future with Tipperary (if there
is such a thing) if he learns to get on free"
tag. Missed alot of training during the year but no
excuse was forthcoming.
Ray Dooley: Wing
Forward. 3rd Business. Club: Coolderry. Played minor
and U21 for Offaly. Likes to play corner forward as
well and would, one day, love to play for Galway (with
Hardy).
TJ. O’Dwyer: Centre
Forward. Electronics Post Grad. Club: Boberlahan-Dualla.
Played minor for Tipperary for a long time. Rarely
seen training and even rarer m college. TJ. wasn’t
that sociable at last years Grad Ball either.
John Fitzgerald:
3rd Manufacturing Technology. Club: Bruff. Played
minor and U21 for Limerick. Works as a part time forester.
Often associated with the sound of falling trees or
breaking timber.
Ger Rodgers: Corner
Forward. 4th Business. Club: Scarriff. Played minor,
U21 and junior with Clare. The only time in the history
of the club that the leader of Clare Mafia lost his
position due to lack of ability on the playing field.
Likes to aim for the far post, that is why he never
scores when in front of goals. Close links with Galway.
Joe Ryan: Full
Forward: 4th Electronic Production. Club: Rahealty.
Played junior for Tipperary. A natural high scoring
forward like his cousin - big Quinn. Might yet become
an honorary member of the Clare Mafia.
Dave O’Driscoll:
Corner Forward: 4th Materials Engineering. Club: Claughaun.
Might be able to concentrate on his hurling now that
Garryowen have won the A.I.L. Still confuses the sliotar
with the oval ball.
Pat Hession: Goal
Keeper. 4th Electronics. Club: Athenry. Played minor
and junior for Galway. Doesn’t take his lack of success
at club level as seriously as Hardy.
Andrew Ryan: Wing
Forward. 3rd Electronics. Club: Hospital. Played U21
for Limerick. Old King Cole himself always tries to
get the bus to stop at Herberts Bar on the way to
Limerick. Still rings home with "pick me up,
i’m lost" messages excuses.
Tom Anthony: Wing
Forward. 4th Materials Eng. Club: Pilltown. Likes
training on the mudpatch, but likes a big feed before
training even more.
Jack Griffin: Mid
Field. 3rd P.E. Club: Thurles Sarsflelds. Goes training
with Darragh after matches but can’t stick his pace.
Often misses training and comes up with original "I
was working all night, John"
Mark Scanlon: Wing
Forward. 3rd European. Club: Clarecastle. Living (dangerously)
on past glories. Has fond memories of last years Fitzgibbon,
even though he did not score. The rest of the panel
have fond memories of Mark in Belfast also.
Frank Burke: 4th
General &Rural Science. Club: Killimerdaly. Frank
was to Conor Hayes as P.1. was to Haughey. Could have
taken over from Conor but many say that his gear was
a bit dull and did not draw attention to him. Freely
admits to having achieved alot in college especially
in hurling.
John O’Halloran:
Wing Back. 1st Business. Club: Monaleen. Claims to
have played minor for Limerick for two years. That
is still only two games, Johno. Will definitely make
the U2 1 panel this year.
Vincent O’Connor.
Corner Back. Electronics Post Grad. Club: Bride Rovers.
Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer The Bread-winner who
keeps the food on the table for all the boys.
Alan Dunne: Corner
Forward. 1st P.E. Club: Lismore. Waterford minor captain
last year. A quietly spoken, intelligent but modest
individual. Favourite saying -"sure I know nothing,
I’m only doing P.E.".
Albie Quinlan:
Wing Back. Club: Upperchurch -Drombane. A dual star
who often gets sent for an early shower.
Michael Gleeson:
2nd Manufacturing Technology. Club: Arrowvale Rovers.
Played minor for Tipperary. Near neighbour of the
Quirkes and had to be employed as the club’s watchdog
on them.
Barry O’Driscoll:
Wing Back: Chemistry Post Grad. Club: Claughaun. Another
of the Claughaun, Creegan, Garryowen Driscolls. A
star of the past who models the most colourful apparell
at training. Favourite possession- his woolly black
hat.
Dermot O’Brien:
Wing Back: 2nd Production Management Club: Milltown
Malbay. Comes from footballing country but is a devout
hurler.
Ger O’Reilly: Wing
Back. Wood Technology Post Grad. Club: Lough Lene
Gaels. Ger a Westmeath senior was one of the stars
of our League campaign but found it difficult to switch
over to championship training. Found Ger Rodgers a
bit intimidating to mark and certainly to listen to.
Paul Conheady:
Wing Back. Club: Tulla. Paul, our intermediate captain
this year, very outspoken and is a real ‘fire and
brimstone’ motivator. Would make any colleges Fitzgibbon
panel.
Fergal Hartley:Mid
Field. 2nd Business. Club Ballygunner. Fulfilled many
roles as a Waterford hurler. Minor, U21 and junior
and was reported to be the one who leaked the Joe
McGrath scandal to 'The Sun'. Is currently on Co op
somewhere between Waterford and France
Bernard Mac Oscair:
Mid field. 1st Electronics. Club: Student Joesephs
Barefield. Played minor for Clare. Very safety conscious,
wears his helmet in the showers even.
Willie Brown: Corner
Forward. 2nd Industrial Chemistry. Club: Dungourney.
Willie Blows hot and cold at training and scores either
three goals or doesn't score at all.
Tadhg Healy: Corner
Forward. 2nd Materials Science. Club. Clyde Rovers.
Tadhg reminds us all of gravity- a hidden force, never
lost a hurley or spilled a drop of water.
