University
of Limerick 2-11 Waterford RTC 1-11
Favourites, Waterford RTC, were beaten in yesterday's
Fitzgibbon Cup final at Clarinbridge, County Galway, by an indefatigable University of Limerick, playing their
extended match of the weekend on heavy ground.
Waterford shot nine first half wides but still went in
at the interval leading by eight points, 1-6 to 0-1. Despite a second-half UL improvement, Waterford led 1-8
to 1-5, with only a minute left. Sean McMahon, however, converted a late penalty to take the match into extr
a time.
Five unanswered points in the first half of added time saw UL make the decisive break and take
their second Fitzgibbon - and first since 1989.
