UL travelled to Dangan on the 20th of Dec. to play UCG in the last round of the Intermediate league. UL's title
was on the line in this encounter as defeat for UL or UCG would have meant an end of any interest in the competition
for this year , The prise for the winners was a crack at WIT in the semi final who have gone undefeated this year.
The game started at a lively pace and UL dominated most of the first half but could not get the necessary scores to
take charge of the game. Waste of good position and scoring chances meant UL struggled for the opening twenty minutes.
Kevin Nealon playing well at centre forward caused many problems for the UCG centre back. But it was Corner forward
and kit man for the senior team Noel Madden who settled UL with accurately placed frees. Sean Ryan dominated the
mid-field exchanges, with Michael Stritch showing the hurling qualities that were expected all year. Half time
approached with UL in front by just a couple of points at 0-7 to 0-5.
The second half started with UL
resuming where they had left off apply pressure on UCG defence, and the strain finally began to show. With
the half back line of Kelly , Brendan Ryan and fresher Mal Travers dominant, UL's forwards finally created
the room they needed and points started to come there way. Con Burns caused havoc on the wing with some
incisive runs created chances for other s to take advantage of, UL raced ahead and indeed it took UCG twenty
minutes to register the first score of the second half. Points from Noel Madden, Kevin Nealon and amazingly
Capt.kelly put UL in command. A goal from Donal Cahir gave UL the breathing space they need, and when UCG f
inally put on pressure the full back line of Hayes, Broughton, and Bohannon they coped well with the pressure.
A late goal by sub John Doyle after a beautifully weighted accurate pass from Darragh Leonard sealed the victory.
A fourteen point win was they end result, but more importantly it gives UL a chance to defend their title and
possibly retain it for the third year.
