Higher Education Senior Hurling
Cork Institute of Technology 1-12
University of Limerick 0-8
Buttevant November 5th 1998
In their opening Higher Education Senior Hurling League game against
Cork IT, UL hurlers put in a very inept display. The
physically stronger Cork side totally outplayed their opponents in the
opening half to open up a 0-9 to 01 lead at the interval. UL
improved a little in the second half, but never troubled a Cork side that
were always in control. Cork mid-fielder Pat Ryan was totally dominant
at mid-field while John Sheehan was the games outstanding player at right
half back for Cork. Eugene O’Neill caused numerous problems for the
Limerick defence but was generally well handled by Niall Fitzgerald.
Ground conditions were ideal but a strong cross-field breeze made it awkward
on occasion for the players. On the evidence of this display UL are
not in with any chance in the Fitzgibbon Cup to be held in Templemore in
late Ferbruary.. Granted this was the first game, with a very
experimental side, the majority of the team seemed devoid of interest
and passion. Stephen O’Hara (with the exception of one mistake)
and Sean Ryan stood out for the losers.
