UL vs CIT [14-11-2001]

By Barry Duggan

The tide of fortune may have turned in University of Limerick’s favour after a very few successful days on the GAA front.

University of Limerick’s senior hurling team picked up their first victory of the season after comprehensively defeating Cork Institute of Technology at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick. This victory will give UL some confidence as the winter approaches having previously been defeated by the Guards, UCC and WIT in the Higher Education League.

Played on perfect underfoot conditions, considering the time of year, UL led from the beginning. After good work by forwards Brian Carroll and John Barron, David Green sent the sliotar crashing to the back of the net after 15 minutes. Castlelyon’s Eoin Fitzgerald was in splendid form and his free-taking accuracy punished CIT’s errors. UL had a sizeable lead at the break with the score line at 1-11 to 0-5.

Despite resolute defending from Ronan Curran at centre-back, CIT had no answer to wave after wave of UL attacks. Points from Gerry Quinn, Niall Moran and Richie Murray kept UL well ahead. Brian Carroll got UL’s second and decisive goal after he pulled on a blocked shot from John Barron.

The final score was 2-17 to 1-12. Gary Loughlin, Mike O’Brien and Pat Sloane all performed admirably for CIT. UL now face Mary I in their last league match before the winter break.
