Fresher A League

Peter O'Brien (PRO), Wednesday December 6th 2006

University of Limerick 1-8
University College Cork 3-9

UL suffered another home defeat in the fresher A league at the hands of UCC today. This game was played on pitch 1 and conditions were very difficult fot hurling. In addition to a very strong wind there were frequent showers and the cold weather lead to some very poor handling. UL playing against the wind had the worst possible start with the concession of two early goals. The home defence was very suspect and were unable to contain the UCC defence. UL only managed one point from play through Seamus Hickey in the first half. UCC continued to display their superiority on the scoreboard and added a third goal before the half time whistle. Free taker Ger Bond added two late frees to leave the half time score at 3-07 to 0-03.

UL made a comeback of sorts in the second half and this was lead by centre back Matt Whelan. Martin Walsh registered two good early points and further scores from Whelan, Niall Lynch and another free from Bond left the score at 3-07 to 0-08. UCC had a point from a free before Niall Quigley scored a late goal foe UL. However this was as good as it got for the home side and UCC had the last say with a point to leave the full time score at 3-09 to 1-08. This result leaves UL in the difficult position of having to win their remaining matches to ensure qualification however this appears unlikely on the evidence of this performance.

Seamus Hickey and Matt Whelan were to the fore for UL before they were both withdrawn through injury others that accounted well for themselves were James Mackey, Martin Walsh and Michael Gleeson.
