Fresher B League

Peter O'Brien (PRO), Wednesday December 6th 2006

University of Limerick 2-4
University College Cork 2-7

UL suffered another home defeat in the fresher B league at the hands of UCC today. This game was played on pitch 1 and conditions were very difficult fot hurling. In addition to a very strong wind there were frequent showers and the cold weather lead to some very poor handling. Playing with the aid of the wind UCC began well and had a commanding lead of five points before UL registered their first score through Enda Walsh. The concession of a very soft goal was a major setback for the home side battling against the elements. UL’s only other sore of the first half came frome the stick of Gavin Morrissey and this left the half time score at 1-05 to 0-02.

UL showed good heart and commitment in the second half and battled hard to get back in the match. Denis O Connor was introuced before the break and he proved a good target man for the long ball in the second half. Despite his ability to win some good possesion he squandered a number of chances and these proved detrimental to the home teams cause. A goal from centre forward Morrissey half way through the second half was cancelled by another UCC goal and this realistically ended UL’s chances. Morrissey added another goal to cap a fine individual performance, however UCC were superior and deserved the victory. Leyster Ryan and Micheal Rafter impressed in defence while John Shiel and Eamon Dwane tried hard. The full time score ended at 2-07 to 2-04.
