Grady Booch

Chief Scientist

Rational® Software Corporation

Grady Booch is one of the leading software development methodologists in the world. Along with Rational colleagues Ivar Jacobson and Jim Rumbaugh, Grady developed the Unified Modeling Language (UML), the industry-standard language for specifying, visualizing, constructing, and documenting the artifacts of software systems.

Grady has been with Rational Software Corporation as chief scientist since shortly after its founding in 1980. His work over the years has made significant contributions to improving the effectiveness of software developers worldwide. He was instrumental in developing two major concepts: an iterative model of software development and the importance of software architecture. He developed the Booch Method, a leading object-oriented analysis and design method, and the Booch components, reusable components which helped to popularize software reuse and make it economically feasible.

Grady was also one of the original developers of several Rational products, including the Rational Environment, the company's original software-engineering environment, and Rational Rose, the company's industry-leading visual modeling tool.

Grady has consulted on numerous projects worldwide - acting as an architectural mentor, helping organizations develop mission critical systems, and assisting others in improving their own software development methods.

Grady is a prolific author and writer whose books and articles have led to a great increase in the awareness and application of object technology. He has written six books, including the best-selling Object-Oriented Analysis and Design, Object Solutions: Managing the Object-Oriented Project, best of Booch: Designing Strategies for Object Technology, Software Engineering with Ada, Software Components with Ada, and the UML User Guide.

Grady has also published over one hundred technical articles on software engineering issues and has consulted and lectured throughout the world. Grady is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association for Computing Machinery, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Computer Professionals for Social responsibility, the Airline Software Council, Dogbert's New Ruling Class (DNRC), and is a board member of the Worldwide Institute of Software Architects. Grady is also an ACM Fellow.

Grady is a Distinguished Graduate of the United States Air Force Academy, where he received his B.S. in computer engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1979.
