Doctoral Workshop A Success Once Again

On Tuesday the traditional ICSE doctoral workshop was held, which takes advantage of the co-location of esteemed SE researchers and gives PhD students the chance to get expert reviews of their work BEFORE it's too late for them to take advantage of such advice. Jeff Magee and Mauro Pezzè lead the workshop, with 8 other reviewers. Lee Osterweil opened the session with a discussion of what a PhD is and an overview of the scientific method. There were good students who took part in the workshop, and Jeff Magee made sure they kept to a strict 20/10 talk schedule. A student said to Mauro "Is Jeff the one who keeps telling us we have 5 minutes left?" Earlier this week, Barry Boehm mentioned that the SE community needs to do better at maintaining corporate knowledge and avoiding reinvention. The doctoral workshop is a good way to do this and should be considered as one of the most important events at conferences where the community comes together.
