Workshop 9: The Third International Workshop on Component-Based Software Engineering: Reflection on Practice

By Mikio Aoyama

The 3rd CBSE (Component-Based Software Engineering) Workshop revealed a number of issues to be explored. This is the third workshop in a series started in 1998 in Kyoto.

This year fourteen papers (out of 40+ submissions) were accepted to foster discussions. After presentations of position papers, we picked up two focused discussions:

  1. what are components and what is component-based software development?

  2. The quality and certification of components and component-based systems.

The second topic emerged from a number of presentations, indicating that the quality of components is becoming a concern in practice.

Kurt Wallnau of the Software Engineering Institute (SEI) played master of the workshop to coordinate the heated debates throughout the workshop.
