Design

The following figure illustrates the floor showing the matrix of sensors. This figure does not illustrate the precision of the sensor array.

Dance Floor Matrix

Hardware:

The floor consists of four layers: a base, a layer of printed circuit boards carrying the sensors, a layer recessed to accommodate the sensors and a protective upper layer of perspex. The floor design has been motivated by the following considerations.

- The floor should have a fine enough resolution to be able to track feet movements in the context of dance.
- The sensor device should be capable of tracking more than one dancer.
- The sensor device should support real-time processing, e.g. be able to track dances, for example traditional Irish dances, that involve very rapid steps .

Software:

The software design has been motivated by the following considerations

- Multiple foot steps should be recorded in real time.
- The dance representation should support choreographic description and analysis.
- The system should be capable of supporting real-time control of other media in the context of cooperation between a performer and dance floor.
