From time to time, U.L. Staff Sailing Club charters yachts from Kinsale or Dingle for a few days offshore sailing along the south coast. This type of sailing is very different from our usual dinghy sailing and as such it gives members more of a chance to experience another aspect of the sport. We organise two such offshore trips annually usually one at the beginning of the summer and another at the end of the summer, along with a weekend's cruising on Lough Derg in mid-July.
The yachts are skippered by the most experienced sailors in the the club with many offshore miles between them. The crew are a mix of experienced sailors and complete novices which goes to show that all levels of sailor can take part in these events.
This trips give you the chance to see some of most beautiful coastline and enjoy the differentt dicipline that is big boat sailing.
We can take any number of crew from eight upwards, usually leaving on a Thursday afternoon and arriving back on a Sunday night. Previous cruises have visited Cork Harbor, Cape Clear Island, Glandore, Baltimore and Schull as well as rounding the famous Fastnet Rock in 2002.. See our calendar of events for details of upcoming weekends away and also check out the photo gallery for photos from previous weekends away.
While on some years, we have also organised a trip up the lake, as many of our club members also own fixed keel boats which are based on Lough Derg. Another alternative is to rent out the small 6m Tirion day sailors from Pat Mc Col in Shannon Sailing. Some members have taken out these boats and if your interested in organising a trip for yourself, be sure to bring an experienced sailor with you.(wet suits are not needed when sailing in these boats)
