Lough Derg Day Trip around the lake

ULSSC : Lough Derg and activities?

Along with the necessary equipment which the club provides to go sailing, probable the biggest resource in ULSSC are the members themselves. Many of whom have expanded their experiences of sailing beyond club activities. After sailing with the club for a year you will be more knowledgeable to take advantage of other boating activities on the lake and in other climates.

With a power boat level two certificate under your belt you be able to assist with club roster duties and gain additional experience on motor boats, but will also know what your doing should you decide to rent out a motor boat to go fishing or to visit the islands on the lake.

Trying out larger sail boats on Lough Derg?
Last Christmas I wanted to bring some friends out sailing, and found this local company which rents out Tirions a small 6.25 m fixed keel sail boat. In total we were 5 adults, two of whom had never sailed before. We sailed from Dromineer to Garry Kennedy and back. For me this was the ideal boat, it has the feel of a dinghy, but with the security which a fixed keel provides. By Colm McGettrick. In 2009 a few other members took out another Tirion sailing from shannonsailing for a trip around the lake and this time I had a camera.

To the Antartic
In 2002, Lisa, one of our past members took a yacht charter to the Antartic. This photo was taken by Jack who was also on the trip.

Visit the Islands on Lough Derg

A little further north from the UL Activity Centre, the Lough Derg Holiday Village rents out fishing boats (Orkney Longliner lakeboats) suitable for 4-5 adults. It is good idea to have a chart of the lake, if your planning on going ashore at an island. (Holy Island) Lough Derg River Shannon.

An Around Ireland Trip
Earlier this year one of our previous club comadores  rented out a 40 foot sailing boat and sailed around Ireland, the entire trip took several weeks, different members from the club took part, here is a link to their record of the trip….. John Kinsella

Thinking of purchasing a yacht?

The best first step in this process would be to participate in one of the lake or coastal trips organized by the club. This will allow you to gain some experience. Talk to other yacht owners in the club. There is a chandlery for boat parts near by in Dromineer( Shannon Sailing Ltd).

Thinking of purchasing your own dinghy ?

Many club members also own their own dinghies, talking to existing club members is probable the best place to start. If your interested in racing then the best person to talk would be Jim.Ryan@ul.ie who is the fireball class captain at our neighbouring  KSU club.

Qualified to sail a yacht?

Before skippering a yacht, there are some qualifications which you will need also insurance companies will expect you to have. These qualifications are usually divided up into a practical and theory qualification. Check with ULAC to see if there is a course starting soon. One alternative to completing these courses locally is to take part in a week long course abroad as part of your holidays.
